It’s Cinco de Mayo! Who doesn’t love to celebrate the fifth of May with Mexican treats and a nice margarita? Michael and I have had a fascination with tequila for the last few years. Aside from a smooth taste, we find that the low glycemic index keeps us pretty much hangover free. It wasn’t an easy to move to tequila. I, like many people, had a rough introduction to tequila back in college. Back then, all we really had access to was Cuervo Gold and that can go sideways very quickly! Through the years, I’ve been exposed to higher quality tequilas that have helped bring me back around. The downside to some of the higher quality brands, however, is price. A few years ago, we found Qui Platinum Extra Añejo Tequila and we were hooked. Qui is not easy to find, but once you do you’ll keep going back. It’s pricey, in the $50 range, but it’s not so out of the realm that it can’t be a good splurge. To find out where to buy Qui in your area, click here.
Michael is our resident mixologist. He’s great with a cocktail shaker and enjoys getting to create cocktails to complement our home cooked meals.
Our go to drink recipe is very simple:
- 1 oz Qui Tequila
- 2 oz of Lime Juice
- Shake with a full cup of ice, and serve straight up or on the rocks
- You can mix with some agave or simple syrup if you like a sweeter drink
Fresh lime is a must in keeping this cocktail low-cal. There are approximately 20 calories in a lime and 69 in an ounce of tequila. When you’re looking at 400 calories for a regular margarita or 150 calories for a standard skinny margarita going this route will give you more room for guacamole and chips. Win-win!
Please Tell the mixologist that I need a Margarita.
